Current NASCAR Points Standings After Dover. Jimmie Johnson Wins.
Submitted by RACING NEWS DIGEST
Jimmie Johnson won and dominated today at Dover International Speedway, A.K.A The Monster Mile. Jimmie did a great job today and earning a 149.?? drivers rating…almost another perfect day.
Martin in reference to Johnson.
“I’m pretty sure that dude is Superman,” Martin said. “I’ve seen that dude up close and I see why he’s so successful. He works harder at it than anybody else, I think, on the circuit.”
This was a great points day for Jimmie Johnson as he closed in to only 10 points behind Mark Martin, you points leader.
Jeff Gordon maintains 3rd but fell back to -65 points back.
The scariest part of the day was an accident involving Joey Logano who slid to the bottom of the track, came all the way back up to the wall. At about the moment he hit the wall head on, Reed Sorenson and Martin Truex Jr. broadsided him. When this happened Logano went rolling for a total of 7 times. He walked away under his own power, indicating that he should be OK.
Bad news for Johnson if your into superstition or stats….no Chase driver has ever won the Chase after winning the second Dover race of the year. Scratch that….that should have read ….. No winner of the second Dover race has ever gone on to win the Cup championship.
Well that firms up my position that Johnson will not win the chase…..but what do I know.
10 of the Chase drivers finished in the top 11 today. Only Greg Biffle and Denny Hamlin finished outside the top 12.
There are a couple of drivers that are really getting into trouble early in the Chase here. Now, none of these drivers are by any means out of it, they are just hurting early.
Kasey Kahne obviously got hurt bad last week by his engine failure. And even though he had a great run today finishing 8th, he still slipped farther away from points leader Mark Martin. Last week Kahne was back -161 points. After an 8th place finish today Kahne fell even farther back to -189 back from Martin. That is how tough this Chase is going to be I believe.
Carl Edwards had an 11th place finish today. Maintains 11th in points but fell back an additional 40 points away from Mark Martin to -153 points back this week.
And I will wrap up with Brian Vickers. Vickers finished 18th today and fell 2 positions in the points to 10th and now he is back -151 points from Mark Martin.
I mentioned I thought this was year was going to develope into 5 (maybe 6) drivers battling for the championship while the rest of the Chase field fell off. I think we are already seeing this, but this picture should become more clearer when we get 2 more races under our belts.
