Ryan Newman Struggles For 9th Place At Atlanta, Drops To 9th In Points

Atlanta Motor Speedway’s race last night for the Sprint Cup guys was the first ever under the lights. Ryan Newman finished 9th giving him his 11th top ten finish of 2009. Newman started 23rd.

Newman started last nights race 7th in the points and 81 points away from 13th. By the end of the night he had dropped to 9th in the points standings. That might sound bad for the points situation but it really isn’t. Newman is now 84 points in front of the 13th position held by Brian Vickers.

Newman didn’t get up to 9th until the end of the race. He battled an ill handling car almost all night keeping himself down around 15th to 20th position.

His biggest problem was that it didn’t seem like he could get a correctly balanced set of tires. At least that is what the car felt like. Crew Chief Tony Gibson had the crew checking and re-checking the tires and everything kept looking pretty good.

Here’s the good news. Only one race left until the Chase. Here’s the bad news, only one race left until the chase. With Newman only having an 84 point advantage over 13th he needs a good race next weekend at Richmond. It just so happens that Richmond is a very good track for Newman. It is his 3rd best average finishing track (SEE HERE (table headers are sortable) ). So that is very good news.

Keep positive thoughts! 84 points can disappear in a heartbeat.
