It’s late and I’m tired and this is what I will write about tomorrow:
- I went to the ARCA race today with my son at Cayuga and had a great experience
- met some fellow bloggers at the race too, some pretty cool guys one might say
- TSN time delayed the NASCAR Cup race today until 11:30 pm due to the EURO 2008 Soccer Championship game, so I didn’t really watch the race today anyway
- Fell asleep watching the time-delayed-and-editied-for-time race (go to comercial on lap 6 and come back on lap 67)
- Too tired to watch it so I am recording it and will watch it tomorrow (actually, later today)
O.K., can’t stay awake any longer … going to bed now … will be in touch later today … promise … zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz …

New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon N.H. is the site of this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
Whenever NASCAR invades this track, a bit of melancholy sets in for me.
Don’t get me wrong, this track has good facilities for both drivers and fans.
It has had some pretty good finishes in the past and now that Bruton Smith owns it, I’m sure it is going to become “fan-tacular” like all of his other racing venues.
So why does this track sit uneasy with me? Two reasons — Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr., both of whom lost their lives at this facility eight weeks apart in 2000 in separate incidents in almost exactly the same spot on the track.
Both of which are catalysts for raising the driver safety concerns in NASCAR, which continue even today.
Adam Petty was the first fourth generation driver in NASCAR. His father Kyle Petty, grandfather Richard Petty and great-grandfather Lee Petty are all winners in NASCAR’s premier series, and Adam seemed destined to do the same. He was only 19 years old when he died of head trauma as a result of hitting the turn 3 wall in practice.
Kenny Irwin Jr. was the Winston Cup rookie of the year in 1998, as well as the Craftsman Truck Series rookie of the year in 1997, and the National Midget Series Champion in 1996. Irwin had been racing since age 6, and was 30 years old when he died of multiple injuries, including significant head trauma as a result of hitting the wall on turn 3 during practice as well.
After the deaths of Petty and Irwin Jr., NASCAR drivers were uneasy and started to question the safety of the New Hampshire track.
But it would be Petty’s grandfather, seven-time Cup Champ Richard Petty who would provide a more insightful and poignant opinion.
“There ain’t nothing the matter with the race track,” Petty said. “These guys run those things 200 m.p.h. It’s circumstances with the way you stop that thing so quick. Your body just can’t stand it.”
Petty was right, it wasn’t the track, it was the impact of the collisions that caused the injuries.
Clearly, after the incidents in New Hampshire, driver safety was an issue that needed to be addressed, but it really wasn’t — not past the discussion stage anyway.
Not even the death of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Tony Roper, who died of head and neck trauma injuries in October of 2000, after a collision with the wall at Texas Motorspeedway was enough to get concerns about driver safety past the discussion stage.
It would finally be four months later, during the Daytona 500 in 2001, when NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt would also die from “head trauma” as a result of a collision with a track wall that people started to take action.
We now have ’soft walls’ or ’safer barriers’ that absorb and dissipate energy during a collision. We now have a newer, more safety-conscious race car, with energy-absorbing foam and impact-dissapating crush zones.
And drivers are now mandated to wear some sort of head and neck safety device, such as the HANS, to prevent neck and head injuries during collisions.
We also have four fewer drivers to cheer for.
So when you watch the race this weekend think about Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr. and their families.
I will be.

Shot taken from my driver’s seat….
This has been our pattern the past week or two… rain for two days, sun for one and it’s looking as if Sunday’s race will be threatened by rain… a race I have tickets for!! We live just far enough away…3 hours…that it’s normally not a bad trip, but with gas at $4.20 and rising… well we better bring a tent and sleeping bags!
A very odd weather pattern…it’s raining today, nice tomorrow with rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday, then nice again on Monday…. I am tempted to gamble and plan on a delay until Monday, but I cannot win a craps shoot with loaded dice. Plus we all know that if at all possible NASCAR will try to get to the 1/2 way mark.
Whatever happen to the Luck of the Irish? Must be that other European blood of mine that rules ! Oh well… umbrellas, rain slickers, hot coffee a tent and a zip lock baggie for my Canon… perhaps Kyle Busch can ask the Luck Angels for help…he seems to have them wrapped around his finger !
Wish us luck!

The following is an excerpt of the Q&A with Carl Edwards, winner of this week’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Milwaukee Mile Saturday in Wisconsin.
Carl Edwards led the final 27 laps on his way to victory lane Saturday in the Camping World RV Rental 250 Nationwide Series race at the Milwaukee Mile.
Carl Edwards: It means a lot to win here. I mean, they’ve been racing for over 100 years here the way I understand it, and it’s a really cool mile-fairground track just like Springfield, Illinois, or Sedalia, Missouri, or DuQuoin or all those cool places that historically all the great racers race. You know, all the folks that come from this area, the great racers, to be able to win here, that’s cool.
Clint Bowyer was clearly unsatisfied with his third place finish at Milwaukee.
Clint Bowyer: We race a long season and things like that happen, and you know you always got to remember the shoe will be on the other foot when you’re racing those guys someday, and don’t be frustrated when it happens to you.
The win ended a streak of 36 winless Nationwide Series races for Edwards.
Carl Edwards: You know it just feels good to win a race, for Save-A-Lot and for our team and for everybody at the shop and all the guys who’ve been working hard and sticking with this program even though we haven’t won a race for a long time. It means a lot to have all that support, so this win is a huge relief.
Having captured the 2007 Driver’s Championship for Jack Roush, Edwards admitted he was frustrated by his victory drought.
Carl Edwards: Yeah, I mean it’s what we do – I mean, I’m a competitor, and I wanna win more than anything in the world. So yeah, it’s very frustrating to, you know, do all these interviews when they put up the chart and say ‘look how great your 2007 season started, look how terrible it’s been since then’. Those are terrible graphics that somebody made up that I have to talk about it seems like all the time so, it’s very nice to get back in victory lane, and it’s very good. I mean, this is what Jack pays me to do and this is what sponsors are all counting on and it’s what the whole team works for, is to win.
Joey Logano, last week’s winner at Kentucky, followed up with a second place finish at Milwaukee – but nearly wrecked battling Brad Keselowski for the top spot late in the race.
Joey Logano: You know, I’d say it’s my fault for sure obviously. But you know, we were racing hard for a lead, and I felt my car was good enough to get up there, and I was a little bit loose on the front side of a run and we both were driving it really hard. And I just overdrove it into a corner, got loose and had to chase up the track.

You know, the race on Sunday was pretty eventful in the end.
It did kind of get bored watching Shrub dominate, but if I were a fan of his I guess I would have been feeling pretty good about his total domination (you’re kidding yourself to think otherwise) of the race.
Here are my thoughts on the race that was (in point form):
- I really feel sorry for Ron Fellows in the #01 DEI car as he was yet taken out again by Kevin Harvick. If you recall, Fellows was a victim of Kevin’s antics in the Busch race last year in Montreal at the end of the race.
- I also feel bad for Ambrose too, but what can you do? Shifting the gears just as you are getting hit - what are the odds? Significantly higher on a road-course that’s for sure.
- O.K., since I’m handing out the feeling sorry awards tonight, I have to mention Jimmie Johnson’s bad luck at Sonoma too. Victim of untimely caution flags compounded with spinning out didn’t help his cause at all either.
- Props go out to: 1) David Gilliland for a great run, 2) for Gilland’s sponsors, 3) to those sponsors who put their name on Robby Gordon’s car, 4) Casey Mears for finishing 5th, 5) Juan Montoya and Tony Stewart for finishing in the top 10 after coming back from late race spins - impressive to say the least, and 6) Elliott Sadler for a great run as well - until the spin anyway.
Finally, for the most important thing about this whole race;
“Did you see Busch’s burnout? It was in the shape of the number 18, just like his car number.”
Did you see it, or am I losing my mind?
Let me know.

It doesn’t just have to be NASCAR, it is a shame when any driver in any racing series dies while racing.
I have had the pleasure of seeing Scott race in Columbus, Ohio back when he was in Top Fuel Dragster.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Well I admit that most days I am borderline.
How in the hell can Silly Season predictions possibly be warranted so soon?? Lee Spencer of Fox NASCAR has jumped on the bandwagon with her annual crap. Silly Season is silly enough and the Big Wig Media folk have to hype it up even more. Nothing against Lee personally… in fact I enjoy her editorials, but she has a huge leap of faith or a crystal ball or perhaps she’s got a chair in the Oval Office.
A rather shocking lineup for the Sonoma race. Kudos to Kahne, but what a surprise and the top 5 are not what I expected with Road King Robby Gordon qualifying 6th. Freaking J. Johnson and J. Gordon in the top 5! WOW…. well Robby is my choice to win this… like him or not, he’s due.
My own mother grew up with and dated Johnny Benson’s dad. They are all Grand Rapids Mich. natives… I was born there… could it be Johnny’s comfort level at Milwaukee is because it’s close to home? Well actually there is 80 miles of water over the big pond of Lake Mich., at any rate…he has become the Milwaukee Beer Blast with 3 consecutive wins there.

I got an interesting email today from a media company working on behalf of Amp Energy drink.
It seems that the first 70,000 individuals to purchase a can of AMP and enter the code found on the bottom of the can at http://www.ampenergy.com/, will have their names featured on Dale Jr’s car, while the remaining names will be featured on his pit wall, car cover, and other areas around the track.
Now I know that this may be old news to some of you as this promo was announced back in April (see press release below), but what I have for you now is something newly added to the promo:
“To celebrate Dale Jr’s first win in 76 races at the Michigan International Speedway last week, AMP Energy has posted a FREE AMP Energy entry code on the website for the Ride with Dale Jr. promotion. The free code is DALEWINS.”
So what are you waiting for? Go do it!
For more info read the following press release:
FANS CAN ‘RIDE WITH DALE JR.’ IN THE AMP ENERGY 500 AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY
FIRST 70,000 TO SIGN UP WILL HAVE NAMES FEATURED ON NO. 88 CHEVY
CONCORD, N.C. – If Dale Earnhardt Jr. goes to Victory Lane in the Oct. 5 AMP Energy 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, he will bring the names of 70,000 members of JR Nation with him.
To become one of the many people who will catch a “Ride with Dale Jr.” all you need is one can of AMP Energy drink and a computer. Beginning April 22, Earnhardt fans can simply take the code found on the bottom of any AMP Energy can, log onto www.AMPEnergy.com and register. The first 70,000 will have their names featured on the special No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet “Ride with Dale Jr.” paint scheme. But the program doesn’t end there. AMP Energy will include each and every person who signs up to “Ride with Dale Jr.” by featuring the additional names on Dale Junior’s pit wall, his car cover and other areas around the track.
“My fan base at Talladega is incredible, so it’s a fitting place for this program,” said Earnhardt, who has won five times at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. “I’m proud of my sponsor, AMP Energy, for giving my fans an opportunity to ride along with me and my team for the AMP Energy 500 in October. It’s a great promotion, and I can’t wait to see how many people sign up to ride along with us.”
For AMP Energy, it’s all about getting Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s avid fan base one step closer to their hero.
“We want every member of Junior Nation to be there with Dale Jr. as he goes for victory in the very first AMP Energy 500 race,” said Ralph Santana, VP of sports, media and interactive marketing, Pepsi-Cola North America. “To have Dale compete in this special AMP Energy paint scheme, surrounded by his fans, will be the ideal way for us to launch our title sponsorship at Talladega.”
About AMP Energy
AMP Energy is a co-primary sponsor of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 88 Chevrolet and the title sponsor of the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega. Launched in 2001 as a brand extension of the original energy drink, Mountain Dew, AMP Energy is continuing Mountain Dew’s heritage in racing.
With its energizing blend of B-Vitamins and a specially formulated, intense combination of taurine, ginseng and guarana, AMP Energy keeps you focused and on top of your game at all times. O.K., before I get into this list let me tell you where I got it from.
The original series was developed in the U.S. and is now available in many countries with books in the series being produced especially for that country, for example, I was given a free copy of ‘The 10 Most Inspiring Canadians”.
Anyway, one of the books was entitled “The 10 Most Unforgettable NASCAR Moments”.
So here is the list from that book;
10) Dale Earnhardt winning the Daytona 500 in 1998 ending ‘20 years of frustration’.
9) Closest Finish ever between Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington (2003 I believe). That was a good finish.
The 1976 Daytona 500 Finish where Pearson and Petty wreck coming out of the last turn and Petty stops just feet short of the finish line in his wrecked car unable to restart it while Pearson’s even more crippled car refires and he is able to limp across the finish line first.
7) The ‘Pass in the Grass’ during The Winston in May of 1987. Have you ever seen the footage of ‘the pass’? It really wasn’t a pass, Earnhardt never gave up the lead as Elliott backed off thinking Earnhardt was going to wreck but he didn’t and went on to win the race.
6) Sept 1, 1985: where Bill Elliott wins the Million dollar bonus offered that year to the driver who can win so many races at certain tracks during the course of the season.
5) May 16, 1992: the first all-star race held under the lights with Davey Allison wrecking hard just after he took the checkers for the win. He hit so hard that he missed the victory lane celebrations as he was taken to the hospital for observations.
4) Sept 6, 1965: Ned Jarrett wins at Darlington 14 whole laps ahead of second place.
3) May 6, 1984: Cale Yarborough wins the race with the most lead changes in a race. The record of 75 scored lead changes still holds today.
2) The Daytona 500 finish in 1979 where Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough wreck all the way down the backstretch into turn three and then get out of their cars and start beating on each other. Bobby Allison would then pull off the track and come to Donnie’s aid and go after Yarborough himself. All of this happened televised live on national television as this was the first Daytona 500 to be broadcast live on national TV.
1) Feb 18, 2001. The death of Dale Earnhardt in turn 4 of the last lap of the Daytona 500.
I would have to agree with almost all of these except I probably would have put Richard Petty’s 200th win at Daytona in front of the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan on the list instead of Dale Earnhardt’s one and only Dayton 500 victory.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m the biggest Earnhardt fan there is, but I think Petty’s 200th win, in front of the President no less, was more significant to the sport than Earnhardt’s Daytona 500 victory.

Here is an interview with Saturday night’s winner Joey Logano:
Announcer: In just his third career start, 18-year-old Joey Logano became the youngest winner in Nationwide Series history when he won the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday night.
Joey Logano: Yeah, it’s pretty cool to come into this series, I mean you’re jumping in one of the best cars out here, you know winning seven races now, it’s pretty remarkable for them. Jumping into it knowing you have to win – you don’t really have an option, so to be able to back it up like we needed to is cool.
This is definitely the coolest feeling I’ve ever had. Those last twenty laps [it] was getting to me. I was in there and I was like ‘come on no caution!’ Just got a decent size lead and I was like, ‘this is what we need right here’ – finally get that white flag and we know we’d have it sealed up. So that was really cool.
It’s crazy awesome. I don’t know how to explain this moment right now – just to be in victory lane with the whole 20 team is just great. I can’t put it into words.
Second place driver Scott Wimmer crossed the line 2.2 seconds after Logano.
Scott Wimmer: Yeah, not a bad night for us. We opted for some track position there – it really helped us out, get us out front, get us in some clean air, but it’s really hard to run with the 18 and 20 and really all the Toyotas. They’ve just really got it going on right now, but we hung in there. This team’s getting better. We’ve been struggling at tracks like this and really struggling all year long and it feels good for the Holiday Inn and Chevrolet to come home in the top two, and we’ll move on to Milwaukee and hopefully get them there.

Well TSN (Totally Screws NASCAR fans) sports station did it again, as I predicted too, they preempted the 24hr delayed NASCAR race from MIS yesterday to play the US Open playoff with Tiger Woods.
There appears to be no re-scheduled time for the re-broadcast either.
TSN didn’t even put the race on their alternative station, instead they had the exact same thing on as their core station: Golf!
I guess I’ll have to wait until Speed airs the race on Thursday.
That’s it, I’m done!
Maybe I’ll be back Tues night with something better to write about.

I hope you all enjoyed watching the race today, I didn’t.
No I mean I really didn’t.
That’s right, TSN - the Total Sports Network, ESPN affliate, and official NASCAR station in Canada - isn’t televising the race until 11:00 am Monday morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was reduced to listening to the fuel starved ending of the race in my father-inlaw’s driveway on my van’s radio because his stereo in the house couldn’t get the MRN broadcast of the race from WGR 550am in Buffalo.
TSN really stands for ‘Totally Screws NASCAR’ fans.
They aren’t even doing it on a sameday tape delay, they are playing Sportscentre right now followed by the Switzerland Euro Cup game and then by Sportscentre again. Correct me if I’m wrong, but even if Switerland wins they still can’t advance because of their loss to Turkey so what’s the point in broadcasting it?
I know, contract obligations.
I’m not getting my hopes up though, since TSN elected to cover the US Open today instead of the NASCAR race they will probably pre-empt the race for the golf playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate.
I’m done. I don’t have anything else to say until (if) I watch the race tomorrow night, except that scathing mad does not really cover how I feel right now.

First…Happy Fathers Day dad’s!!
Finally a Nationwide race worth remembering. We have another prodigy on our hands… Joey Logano. ‘nough said!…. He will become a household name, but then so has Kyle Busch. The difference being..Logano is a likable kid.
Today’s race in my home state…Michigan!! Great state for sure. The race is rather on the boring side though… oh well. It’s still racin’ and the Winner will be…………….

And two weeks before that I had the top 5 pretty much nailed, including Kasey Kahne.
It almost looks like I know what I’m talking about.
Personally, I consider it a form of beginners luck because I’m just starting out with this whole newspaper thing. I’m quite sure that I’ll miss the mark with my predictions and watch-for’s sooner or later. Until that happens though I’ll just keep on riding that wave.
As far as who I’m really pulling for at MIS this weekend, well, even though I didn’t really mention him in my article, I really want Dale Jr to get that 1st win monkey off of his back. But if Jr does not win then I would really like to see Travis Kvapil in the unsponsored Yates Racing Ford pull a victory out of his hat. I think it would be good for his team to get that win, more so than Dale Jr getting his first win for Hendrick that’s for sure.

By the look of this shot I took one would think these two have known each other for years. Actually…. this is at Daytona during Race Week…the Thursday. Jeff Hammond was awesome and few people can resist the charm and charisma of my wife Pattyjo.
It’s this gift of hers that has landed us a pair of free tickets to Loudon for the 6/29 race. A local car dealer / friend called us last week and said he has two tickets on the finish line…. would we like them?? At first we thought…”ok, what’s this going to cost us?”
Not one penny!! He simply adores Pattyjo and life has been very hard on us for the past 6-7 months due to Patty getting hurt at work. Terry, the ticket bearer, has even offered us a car off of his lot, with a tank of gas and a dealer plate for the 3 1/2 hour trip.
Now most men would never tolerate the antics and flirtatious behavior Pattyjo exhibits. Me on the other hand… well I just roll with it. I even encourage it at times. It can be quite entertaining and as you just read, rewarding too.
Last weekend Lake George had it’s annual bike rally, The Americade. I turned away for one minute and when I looked back Pattyjo was on the back of a Harley riding off with some stranger. As it turned out he was a cop from Connecticut and he was nervous the whole ride thinking I was going to be pissed off….. hell, when they finally returned I took pictures of them!!
She is very, very much in love with me and would never do anything to compromise our marriage. Her spirit’s are down and her self esteem is low because of her accident. It’s this sort of thing that gives me pleasure… to see her happy doing what she enjoys…. flirting and getting attention!!
You go girl!!!

Former NASCAR Nationwide Series official Mauricia Grant is suing NASCAR for 250 million big ones.
Why?
Alleged racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.
I honestly don’t know what to make of this. A lot of the things she says happened actually sound possible.
Is she just another disgruntled former employee pulling out the racial and sexual discrimination card? Or, is there some validity to what she alleges?
Fortunately, that is not for me to decide. But even if half the stuff she says has some merit of truth in it then that doesn’t paint a pretty picture of NASCAR.
Don’t be surprised to see heads being lopped off if this lawsuit is somewhat successful. People will be sacrificed for the sake of the organization.
It would be interesting to see what other NASCAR officials have to say about this, especially females and non-Caucasians. I bet they are not answering any calls at the moment though.

Just after snack, on her way to bed, on Saturday night she climbs up on my lap and says she wants to watch NASCAR with me.
Remember, this kid hates NASCAR. I quickly figure out she does not want to go to bed just yet and she is pulling out the ‘cuddle with Daddy and watch NASCAR’ card. Man is she the best daddy manipulator out there or what?
Anyway, I readily agree with her to let her watch the end of the race with me, or until the ‘evil Mommy’ comes along and forces her to go to bed - “which ever happens first,” I explain.
Those of you who know, you can’t pass up cuddle time when it is being offered because it is offered so infrequently as the kids get older. You’ve got to take it when you can get it.
I ask her which car does she want to win and she promptly replies, “The white one”.
That would be Brad Keselowski’s #88 Navy ride she was pointing at.
“Not the yellow one?” I | |
