This shot I took the other night reminds me a little of this past weekends racing…. Changes!!
It all started with Kyle Busch not winning the NCTS race and ended with Kyle Busch not winning the Pocono race. Perhaps it had something to do with his stretching things to the limit. He practically had to move at the speed of light to get from Pocono on Friday to Texas where he finished a respectable 2nd in the Truck race, but it was downhill from there. He was back in Pocono Saturday for practice only to wreck his primary car. He then bounced to Nashville for the Nationwide race only to have a terrible race, by his standards, with a lowly 20th place finish. A big kudos to Brad Keselowski for his 1st and well deserved Nationwide victory! Busch is either insane or just plain stupid because his showing in the Cup Race at Pocono Sunday was an obvious spectacle of an over tired, fatigued driver. With a careless move on the 47th lap where he just seemed to move up the track aimlessly only to find Jamie McMurray there. Busch’s car was extensively damaged. Able to return later 87 laps down, he held out until he spun the car again with only 22 laps remaining landing him a 43rd place finish. His points lead has been narrowed considerably with Jeff Burton now only 21 points behind him.

Pattyjo, my wife, says Busch is a pompous ass and deserved what he got. She says … “Look at me!!” “I’m Kyle Busch… the next best thing to…” Well, you get my drift and I tend to agree with her. I also highly doubt he’ll learn anything from this as he’ll rationalize and place blame everywhere except on himself.

An outstanding race by Kahne and The Biff…. well, if Greg’s luck would only turn we’ll see him in Victory Lane.

but hear me out on this.
I know I usually do a post-weekend rant/rave, but I’m going to put that on pause for the time being, come back tomorrow for that.
Instead, I offer you Marty Smith’s new article about Dale Earnhardt Jr over at ESPN.com.
I may not be the biggest ESPN fan, but I do appreciate good stuff when I see it, or read it in this case.
Marty’s story on Dale Jr is good, and fairly well written, I especially like his bucket metaphor - you have to read the article to find out about it.
Read it, and let me know your feelings.

l came across an interesting article by Raygan Swan at nascar.com. It was about NASCAR drivers and their ever present sunglasses. It was a pretty good read actually, but I’m somewhat disappointed by it as well.

I’m disappointed, not because my favourite sunglass wearing driver Dale Earnhardt wasn’t mentioned in the article for his sunglasses too, but because it is never pointed out and gave credit to the one who brought big money sponsorship for wearing sunglasses into NASCAR. And that was Dale Earnhardt of course. That is why I’m disappointed, no credit given.

Sure Richard Petty wore the sunglasses with the little STP logo in the corner of one lens, but that was him, he never got paid to wear them in the 70’s and 80’s (at least not that I know).
It wasn’t until Dale Earnhardt started to endorse Gargoyles Eye-wear that the sponsorship dollars came pouring in. Rusty Wallace quickly followed with his Oakley endorsement, as did DW.

Even Dale Jr. wore Gargoyles before his now familiar Spy Wear sunglasses.

Good article, but Dale Earnhardt and Gargoyles should have been mentioned.
One other thing to note about sunglass wearing drivers; don’t you think Kyle Busch is trying to be a little like The Intimindator” by wearing those gold lens glasses just like the Gargoyles Dale wore?

This is the first car in a multi-year series that will continue the legacy of Dale Earnhardt by teaming him up with other iconic American personalities like Johnny Cash.
“The Man in Black” car with Earnhardt’s famous paint scheme was unveiled Thursday with Cash and Earnhardt’s names and likenesses on the sides and hood of the car.
“My dad and Johnny Cash were both known for their intimidating demeanor and rugged and tough persona,” Earnhardt’s daughter, Taylor, said. “Both are known as ‘The Man in Black’ and this program really brings them together for the first time to celebrate the lives and careers of these two great American icons. This racecar is the first with dad’s image and I know that he would think that it’s pretty cool to share a ride with Johnny Cash.” - RCRracing.com
As far as I’m concerned this is nothing more then a money grab as evident below;
“Motorsports Authentics, through its Action Racing Collectables die-cast brand, will be offering a collectible version of the limited edition No. 3 Dale Earnhardt/Johnny Cash car. Pre-orders are being taken on goracing.com, nascar.com and at Motorsports Authentics authorized dealers nationwide. Chase Authentics, the authentic trackside apparel of NASCAR, will also offer Cash and Earnhardt fans an opportunity to express their love of both men through an array of apparel items such as hats, t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts.” - RCRracing.com
… and …
“In addition to Thursday’s unveiling and special guitar presentation from Sam Bass, it was announced today that QVC will go live from Nashville on Friday night with its “For Race Fans Only” show. Set to air from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. EST live from the Musicians Hall of Fame, “For Race Fans Only” will celebrate the “Man in Black” program and give Cash and Earnhardt fans around the world a unique opportunity to see this historic convergence of NASCAR and Country Music.” - RCRracing.com
Where are the proceeds going? To the Dale Earnhardt Foundation? I don’t know, it does not say in the article.
If the proceeds were going to charity I might be more inclined to make a purchase, but as it stands right now, there is no way I am going to buy one of these ‘collectibles’. This certainly is the “Cash Car” all right.
I’m a die-hard Dale Earnhardt fan, not a mindless Earnhardt merchandise zealot who will buy anything because it has Dale Earnhardt’s name, image, number, etc. on it somewhere.
This is the 3rd of 3 posts I did today, so don’t leave just yet. Why don’t you scroll on down to see what else there is?
