rantingraving142.jpg Things have gotten a little hairy around here, so I’ll post my comments about the shoot out and qualifying tonight.

I’m glad Jr won BTW, and I’ve got some things I want to say about his win too - and about the predictions I made regarding the shootout. Hint: No apologies here.

Stay tuned faithful race fans.

rantingraving141.jpg Bud Shootout practice on Friday night looked like a high-speed demo derby, with two separate incidents involving a multitude of cars and teams.

The first incident started when Bowyer made contact with Newman sending him up the track into several other cars, including Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. All those drivers will be in back-up cars Saturday. One thing though, the back-up cars are still back home in the Charlotte NC area. Those truck drivers are going to earn their keep. Perhaps, since there are a number of them, they can get a police escort.

There really wasn’t much finger pointing after the incident. Newman went to Bowyer to find out what happened and it was really determined to be a ‘racing incident’, nothing more and nothing less, with Bowyer taking a little more of the blame than the others.

One the other hand, the second incident of the night involved two of the sports hottest shoes, and hottest heads, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart.

It appeared to me, after watching the replay several times, Tony had a run on Kurt and thought about going low, but moved high because the low lane was blocked by another car and Kurt dropped down a little bit leaving the high lane a little more open than before.

Now Tony should know better, especially where Kurt is concerned, but he moved to the outside of Kurt’s car and just got a fender beside him when Kurt came back up the track. Obviously two cars can’t occupy the same spot and bent fenders, quarter panels, and attitudes ensued.

Personally, I want to know what Kurt’s spotter was saying to Kurt when Tony was getting a run on him. I know it is easy to lay blame on the spotter, but let’s be realistic here, Tony was going three wide before this and he was closing the gap good so if Kurt’s spotter didn’t say anything about Tony being there then this is just as much his fault as anyone else’s.

Honestly, this is just as much as a racing incident as the first one, but Kurt didn’t react the same way as his teammate Ryan Newman did.

After he was wrecked, Kurt then drove into the side of Tony’s car no less than 3 times. Tony then blocked Kurt’s way into the garage and Kurt had to drive around him. Once Kurt got around Tony he gunned his car a bit and forced one of Stewart’s crew members to quickly side step his car.

This is not the first time these two have run into each other on the track and have had hard feelings about it, but both times it was Kurt who used his car as a weapon, and both times he has nearly hit one of Stewart’s crew members – although this time it was not as close, or serious, as the first time, but still none-the-less Kurt needs to think about the possible consequences of his actions.

I have no problem what happened on the track between the two, and I’d still have no problem with it if they had just simply parked their cars and discussed it between themselves like Newman and Bowyer did. I’d even have no problem if they parked their cars, got out, and then proceeded to kick the crap out of each other either. But what Kurt did with his car is uncalled for. You cannot use your car as a weapon, period.

I think Kurt should be parked for the Bud Shootout and, based on his past history of being a hot head that uses his car as a weapon; he should also be placed on probation for the rest of the year in all of NASCAR’s racing series, not just Cup.

If NASCAR really wanted to teach Kurt a lesson then they should also park him for the Daytona 500. But it didn’t work when former car owner Jack Roush parked him, so how why would it work now? Maybe because this suspension is coming from the governing body and not a ‘lame duck’ car owner as Kurt was leaving Roush at the end of the season anyway and the suspension was at the end of the year.

If I didn’t know anything about NASCAR, and someone asked me who I thought the past Champion between Kurt and Ryan was based on their reactions to the incidents I would have picked Newman because he acted more like a Champion than Kurt did after he got wrecked and Newman was a more innocent participant in his incident than Kurt was – Newman simply just got run over, while Kurt moved into Tony a bit.

Update: uncomfirmed rumours say that while in the NASCAR trailer a punch was thrown Kurt Busch’s way.

rantingraving140.jpg Piedmont Distillers, Madison , NC , the only legal Distiller in North Carolina , and NASCAR driving legend Junior Johnson have joined forces and introduced the company’s second moonshine product, Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon. Johnson is now part owner of Piedmont Distillers.

“I am really proud to own part of this company,” says Johnson. “I’ve done a lot of things in my life, and my history in the moonshine business is no secret. Back in the old days, we learned to drive cars fast because we’d go to jail if we didn’t. Now you can buy part of a moonshine business, tell everybody where you can buy the product and it’s all legal. It’s a different deal then it was back then.”

Having Junior Johnson involved in Piedmont Distillers has been amazing,” states Joe Michalek , president of Piedmont Distillers. Junior had really jumped into the heart of this business and is taking part in every aspect of our product. He’s truly a legend, not only in NASCAR, but also in the moonshine trade. Our business is a lot different than it was in the early days, but the desire to produce a quality product that taste’s great remains unchanged.”

Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon follows the Johnson family’s generations old tradition of making moonshine. Every batch is born in an authentic, copper still and is hand-crafted in small batches. Midnight Moon is triple distilled to provide the highest quality, premium moonshine available.

After mastering his driving skills in the Carolina hills running moonshine for his father, Junior began his racing career in 1955, winning five races that year.

Junior’s racing career was cut short though as he was arrested while working at his father’s moonshine still in 1956. He was sentenced and served 11 months in prison. He returned to NASCAR in 1958 and never looked back. He won a total of 50 races as a driver in his career.

Johnson eventually hung up his driver’s helmet and put on an woner’s hat and eventually went on to earn six NASCAR Winston Cup champions as an owner with drivers Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip each winning three titles. To this day Yarborough remains the only driver in NASCAR history to win 3 titles in a row.

President Reagan granted Johnson a presidential pardon in 1986 for his 1956 conviction.

“It was probably one of the biggest moments in my life,” Johnson said. “He came out of the Oval Office and gave me my pardon and talked to me for 20 or 30 minutes. … It was just a great event.”

I am not quite awake yet, so please forgive me for any mis-spellings and/or unexplained jargon. The fact is I am plum wore out after yesterday’s Daytona day.

In a word…. pheonomenal!! We hit it on the right day with Bud Shootout practice going on and the infield crowd was minimal giving us the opportunity to get upclose with many drivers. PJ got so many autographs that I lost count. We also got very close and personal with the Speed guys and Jeff Hammond nearly took PJ away from me!!

Aside from all that… what an incredible place!! The infield pass yesterday was only $15, but it was worth 10 times that. I was pratically inside the garage area and was standing so close to the pack running in draft at 190+ that I got hit in the face with flying dust. My camera got a workout and I will post some photos later next week.

The old cliche’… “watch out for Greeks bearing gifts”… has an element of truth to it, but no way in the negative as George Vroom V. proved. We had the most pleasant meeting and George is a pure gentleman. Not only did he insisit on paying for breakfast, during our parking lot departure he presented us with gift certificates to a wonderful Bistro and shocked me even more when he handed me a Dale Jr. 1/32nd scale diecast. Not just any diecast, but the final paint scheme of 07′ in the CoT Elvis Limited Edition. He said it was an extra one he had lying around. The level of gratitude I felt never fully hit me until PJ and I were on I-4 West heading for Daytona. What a great guy George is!!!

George, there will be snowballs arriving in your mailbox for your little lugnuts in the very near future!!

What a grand idea….we all somehow plan a bloggers convention…. well, it’s a nice thought and after meeting my friend George yesterday I can read his blog with a smile knowing the man behind the keyboard.
