I don’t know that anyone would ever question if auto racing is American or not. I’m sure every NASCAR fan will tell you in a heartbeat that it is an example of the core of patriotism in this nation. I agree, and thanks to Mark Zeske I can mention 3 of my most proud moments.
You may be familiar with other moments, and if so do share them [especially if you can add photos or video].
- 3. The NASCAR New Hampshire 300 held on November 23. The first race held after 9/11. Seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking the victory lap with that American flag just hit me.
- 2. Daytona 500 in 1991, the five branches of the U.S. Armed Services were represented in theme painted cars. They were (with drivers) Alan Kulwicki (No. 7, Army); Greg Sacks (No. 18, Navy): Mickey Gibbs (No. 24, Air Force); Dave Marcis (No. 71, Coast Guard) and Buddy Baker (No. 88, Marines).
- 1. And the item that made me most proud occurred most recently. Memorial Day of this year, 2007, in a Tribute to Freedom 10 drivers had their cars adorned with images of American heroes. There were 8 Cup drivers and 2 Busch drivers.
You may have different preferences, let’s hear them.
